Stars' Season Ends In Loss To Falcons

The Dominican University baseball team saw their 2019 campaign come to a close on Friday, falling to the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons, 8-3, on day two of the 2019 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Tournament.  The loss drops the Stars to 20-20 overall, just the fourth 20-win season in program history and third under current head coach Steve Hardman since 2012.
Freshman Bryant Bagshaw, 9-0 entering Friday's game, suffered his first loss of the season, surrendering seven runs on nine hits and two walks while equaling his season-high with nine strikeouts through 6.1 innings on the mound.
The Falcons drew first blood, taking a 2-0 lead after the top of the first on a homer from Tyler Haffey.  The Stars answered with a run in the bottom of the first when Brandon Diedrich came through with an RBI single to right with runners at first and second.
The Falcons got that tally back in the top of the fourth before breaking open the game with a four-spot in the top of the seventh to chase Bagshaw from the game.
Dominican got two of those runs back in the bottom of the inning. Diedrich started a two-out rally with a single to left and later scored when Mike Buckley singled throught he left side.  Hayden Young followed with an RBI single and the Stars then loaded the bases when Kevin Evans worked an eight-pitch walk, chasing Falcons' starter Matthew Olig from the game.  However, Niko Kutsulis entered the game and escaped the seventh without further damage and then worked the eighth and ninth innings without surrendering a run.
The Stars managed to outhit the Falcons 12-11 in the loss.  Frankie Sessa went 4-for-5 to finish the season with a .399 batting average, the sixth highest single season batting average in Dominican baseball history.  Diedrich finished with three singles, going 3-for-5 with an RBI while Young added a pair of hits with a walk and an RBI.
