Stars Sweep Regents

Sat Apr 13, 2019
The Dominican University softball team picked up a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) series win, sweeping the Rockford University Regents on Saturday evening at the Ballpark at Rosemont.  The Stars took game one, 6-1, behind a solid outing in the circle from freshman Allyson Dilday before taking the nightcap, 3-1, to move to 16-12 on the season and 7-5 in NACC play.
Dominican's Sunday series against the Edgewood College Eagles was postponed earlier on Saturday due to Sunday's forecast of cold and snow.  So the Stars will return to the diamond on Monday, hosting the Mount Mary University Blue Angels in a non-conference twin bill at the Ballpark.
Game One: Dominican 6, Rockford 1
Dilday improved to 7-3 on the season, surrendering one run on five hits and nine walks while striking out four.  The rookie worked in and out of trouble, stranding 11 runners on the base paths for the Regents.
The Regents scored a run in the top of the first, opening an early lead, before Dominican's Hannah Gordon knotted the game at 1-1 with an RBI single to right in the bottom of the inning.
The Stars then pulled in front in the bottom of the second, plating a pair of runs.  Julia Orozco looped a single to center to start the inning and later came around when Alyssa Stuart reached on a throwing error.  Stuart later scored when Megan Hufnagle singled up the middle, one of four hits for the freshman slapper who went 4-for-4.
The Stars then tacked on some insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth.  Gabby Curran roped a run-scoring triple to the gap in right-center and then scored when Hufnagle singled up the middle.  After swiping second, Hufnagle then scored when Gordon doubled down the line in right.
Game Two: Dominican 3, Rockford 1
The Regents took another 1-0 lead before the Stars got the bats going, evening the score 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth when Cat Klostermann bounced into a fielder's choice with runners at the corners, scoring Hufnagle.
Then after a scoreless fifth, Dominican pulled in front in the bottom of the sixth when Gordon doubled to left with Hufnagle aboard and came all the way around when the Regents threw the ball away, putting the Stars in front, 3-1.
The two-run lead was all Sydney Kuderna needed as the senior left-hander worked three scoreless innings out of the bullpen to improve to 3-2 on the season.
Hufnagle and Gordon picked up two hits apiece in the winning effort.
