Stars Downed On Getaway Day

Sat Mar 9, 2019
The Dominican University baseball team brought the 2019 spring trip to Fort Pierce, Florida, to a close on Saturday morning, falling to the Maritime College Privateers, 4-0.  The Stars wrap up the trip, going 3-5, including a pair of one-run losses.

The Privateers scored a run in the first on Phil Russo's RBI single and added three in the second to chase the Stars' Brandon Diedrich from the game.  Trevor Fulmer came on in relief, hanging zeros the rest of the way for the Privateers but the Dominican bats could not muster any runs.

The Stars managed just four hits and seven base runners in the loss.  Dominican's best chance to score came in the top of the eighth when Kevin Evans reached on a two-out single.  Ryan Simak was then hit by a pitch, putting runners at first and second but Ryan Maciaszek got a strikeout to end the threat.

Going 1-for-4 with a single, Frankie Sessa extended his reached base streak to start the season to 11 games.

Diedrich took the loss, falling to 0-2 on the season.  The sophomore lasted 1.2 innings, surrendering four runs on five hits and one walk while striking out one.  Fulmer worked 6.1 innings in relief pitching around four hits and a walk while striking out seven.

The Stars, now 5-6 on the season, head back to the Midwest and will have a week to prepare for a Saturday doubleheader at Millikin next Saturday.  Dominican will then host the Cornell College Rams for a three-game set the following weekend at Schaumburg Boomers Stadium.
