Stars Split With Blue Jays And Dutchmen

Fri Mar 8, 2019
The Dominican University softball team moved to 6-4 on the season, knocking off the Elizabethtown College Blue Jays 13-4 in five innings before going to extras with the Lebanon Valley College Dutchmen, in a 4-3 loss for the Stars.  The Dutchmen's walk-off victory over the Stars, returns the favor to Dominican who has walked off three times in ten games so far this season.

The Stars will close out their 2019 spring trip to Clermont, Florida, on Saturday, taking on the Gordon College Fighting Scots and Roger Williams University Hawks on the Stars' getaway day.

Game One: Dominican 13, Elizabethtown 4

In the Stars' early morning affair with the Elizabethtown Blue Jays, Hannah Gordon blasted a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth, extending the Stars' lead to 13-4 and ending the game.  The long ball was the first of the season for the Stars who are batting .305 through the first ten games of the 2019 season with 19 doubles.

Sydney Kuderna picked up the win in the circle for the Stars, improving to 2-1 on the season.  The senior left-hander surrendered four runs on eight hits while letting her defense work behind her.  Over 4.1 innings, Kuderna induced nine fly outs and four ground outs while tossing 77 pitches before Cat Klostermann got the final two outs of the game.

Offensively, the Stars pounded out 12 hits, three for Kuderna and two apiece for Gordon and Klostermann who drove in four runs apiece in the game.

Game Two: Lebanon Valley 4, Dominican 3

Each team scored a single run in the first inning before the Stars broke through for a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.

The Dutchmen got one run back in the bottom of the sixth, chasing Allyson Dilday from the game after a leadoff walk.  The Stars' freshman had allowed just two hits and two walks over five-plus innings of work and left with the lead intact.

A walk and a pop out later, Rylee Shockley loaded the bases for the Dutchmen with a single to center.  The Dutchmen then pulled within a run then when Robin Feaster bounced out to second.  Klostermann then escaped the sixth, getting a lineout to right.

Despite a leadoff single in the top of the seventh, the Stars could not manage an insurance run, allowing the Dutchmen to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh when Annie McClain singled to right to push across pinch runner Jen Kaufman.

The Stars again could not manage a run in the top of the eighth while Lebanon managed to plate Savannah Toth from second with a single up the middle by Feaster.

Gordon had two more hits for the Stars in the loss, pushing her batting average to a team-high .452 with 14 hits in 31 at-bats.
