Stars Fend Off Edgewood

Mon Feb 11, 2019
The Dominican University women's basketball team scored a huge Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) victory on Monday night at the Igini Sports Forum, topping the Edgewood College Eagles, 48-44.  The win pushes the Stars to 15-9 overall and 11-8 in the NACC, one-half game behind the Eagles for fourth place in the conference with just one game remaining for Dominican.

"Tonight was a phenomenal effort defensively," commented Amanda Parker, the Stars' first-year head coach, "lead by Amari Stafford and Timiya Ray. I was impressed with how well we focused on our game plan and executed it effectively. When this team clicks, they are capable of some truly special things."

The Stars led for most of the first three quarters before a pair of Abbey Shane free throws put the Eagles in front 44-42 with 3:23 to play in the fourth quarter.  The free throws would be the final points of the night for the Eagles while Amari Stafford put the Stars back in front with a corner three with just over two minutes to play after Stephenee Huggans penetrated into the paint before finding Stafford for the open look.  Huggans then sealed the win, converting on three of four attempts at the free throw line in the final twenty seconds.

Stafford finished with a team-high 13 points on 5-for-12 shooting in the game while Timiya Ray rounded out a double-double effort with 12 points and a game-high 19 rebounds.  The junior added five blocks and five steals in 37 minutes of floor time.  Huggans rounded out three in double-figures scoring for the Stars, dropping in ten points off the Stars' bench.

Dominican shot 18-for-59 from the field as a team but took advantage of some extra possessions, turning 20 Edgewood turnovers into 19 points and pulling down 11 offensive rebounds to score ten second chance points.

Edgewood was paced by Alyssa Lemirande's 15 points on 6-for-11 shooting.  The sophomore added a team-high 12 rebounds and five assists in 36 minutes of work.

Dominican closes out the regular season on Wednesday, traveling up to Marian University in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff against the Sabres.  With a win, the Stars can secure their spot in the NACC Tournament for the first time since the 2011-2012 season.
